Sirius and His Cohorts in Service

A reminder – on this date in 2001 Sirius, a bomb sniffing police dog lost his life in the attacks on the World Trade Center. I hope his end was as painless as possible when he crossed the Rainbow Bridge. They also served.

Above: Artist Debbie Stonebraker’s portrait of Sirius, a Port Authority bomb-sniffing dog killed in the World Trade Center. The new Battery Park City dog run will be named after him.

Let us not forget the many search, rescue, and cadaver dogs who worked tirelessly and at great cost during the months and weeks after 9/11.

In June of this year Bretagne (pronounced Brittany), the last living search and rescue dog from the WTC crossed the Rainbow Bridge. She was blessed to have her handler, Denise Corliss, by her side.

May the Nature Spirits guide them home. May the Honored Dead welcome them. May the High Ones grant them rest, and rebirth in due time. As it was, as it is, as it will be. There will be a returning for them.

Thank you for your service.
